  Interesting Facts
  • Laptop computers use ninety percent less energy than desktop computers.
  • Apple computers have a new Air Port technology out for a few specific laptop computers. It allows I-Book Laptops to connect to the Internet wirelessly and still maintain a fairy high speed. This wireless technology has spread rapidly through and is used by many companies today.
  • You've probably heard of the Eddie Bauer model vehicle created by Ford. Well, now Eddie has his hands on a Compaq laptop Eddie Bauer model.
  • A good chunk of new laptops are being created with pre-assigned buttons intended to control compact disk or MP3 functions.
  • New laptops are being created to weigh as little as 3.75 pounds. I have heard that certain guidelines distinguish a palmtop from a laptop. I guess these newer versions don't yet cross that boundary.
  • The most interesting fact I’ve come across by far is this one. NASA used a custom or specialized model of the IBM Thinkpad for their work in a space shuttle as well as in the International Space Station. At this time it was running Microsoft Windows 95. I’m sure they are using a much more updated version today and tons more software. I just found it amazing that a company like NASA would actually trust a laptop for a bunch of their astronomic needs. That laptop must have been one good machine!

Laptop Convenience

Convenience is a huge factor in purchasing a laptop and should be considered before any final decisions are made. The first feature of convenience is the input device. Desktops normally use the old-fashioned mouse and keyboard, but for the small amount of allotted space to a laptop, the choices expand. A mouse doesn't just have to be plugged in with a cord, it can be a touchpad (when you move your finger across the pad it controls the cursor), a trackpoint (a pushing of your finger over the point moves the cursor), or a trackball (rotating the ball in the middle of the keyboard controls the cursor). The keyboards also take on a different role in changing the way they look or where the arrow keys and such are on them to conserve space.

Size and weight are two other major convenience factors. It should be portable and easy to carry. Thickness, width, and weight should be observed. Frequent travelers should also take in the fact that their laptop needs to be lighter. Weight varies from four to ten pounds. The soon-to-be user should always try picking up or carrying their choice of laptop around before purchasing it just to make sure that the size is going to work for them. Laptops also tend to be dropped at least once, so the case of the laptop should be somewhat durable, accidents do and will happen. Carrying cases are a whole different thing. They should be lightweight, waterproof, have comfortable shoulderstraps, has a big enough volume for all of the user's accessories, and is padded on the inside to protect this expensive piece of equipment.
